Fall Fishing

Fall is rapidly approaching and we have begun our fall fishing charters. We only have a month left in our 2015 fishing season! “Mr. Muskie Too” is still at our home port of Jefferson Beach Marina. We have both our smaller boat “River Raider” and our big boat “Mr. Muskie III” up in Algonac, MI. for our Sturgeon fishing charters. We are still running Muskie, Sturgeon and Perch trips through the end of October.

We have had some awesome days to wrap up our Bass fishing charters. The Bass aren’t as schooled up as they were in the summer, hence our numbers of fish caught were down a bit. However the quality of the Bass has been amazing. We have seen more Bass over the 5 and 6 pound mark this year than any other year. We recently boated 4 fish over 6 pounds in one charter. We also broke our biggest mark this year with a 7 pound monster Small Mouth Bass!

Muskie have been on the feed this past month. We have had some awesome days with over 10 caught per trip. We have had many double and triple headers as well. This last few weeks has been a transitional period and they will begin their fall feeding frenzy very soon!

Our Sturgeon charters have been very successful and our customers are getting hooked with battling these prehistoric river monsters!

We have so far boated 39 Sturgeon total and have caught 14 over 60 inches and set our new record at a whopping 72 inch monster that weighed over 100 pounds! We are running these trip out of both our small and big boats to accommodate all size groups and budgets.
If you haven’t yet got out to do some fall Muskie or Sturgeon fishing, now is your last chance for the 2015 Season!

Give us a call to set up your trips.

Summer Fishing

Well the heat of Summer is finally upon us and the fishing has been getting hotter just like the weather!

We have been fishing Bass on the Canadian side of the lake since their opener and have had some awesome days of catches over the 4 dozen mark. The quality of the bass has been out of this world! We have had many days with 4 and 5 pounders as a frequent occurrence and have set a new Bass record with Mr. Muskie Charters with a 7 plus pound Small Mouth Bass! This action will continue through the end of August, so if you haven’t had that hands on fish fighting with these trophy Bass. Now is the time to get your trip scheduled!

Muskie season started out a bit slower this season with days of lower than normal numbers of Muskie caught but has been picking up since the start of July. We have had many days recently of over 10 Muskies boated! We have caught 6 over the 30 pound mark and our best so far is 36 pounds that was 53 inches! This fish can be beat as there are a few more good months of Muskie fishing, so get on out with us and try to be the 2015 champ!

We have been posting many photos and videos on our Facebook page and have been using and underwater camera to get some real awesome footage of Muskie following and attacking our baits. Like us on our Facebook page and check out this awesome ground breaking technology and keep up to date with what we have been doing out on the lake.

Sturgeon fishing season is just around the corner and we will have both our “River Raider” and “Mr. Muskie III” up on the St. Clair River from September 1st through October 23rd. We can accommodate both small or larger groups for these charters. They are a great way to enjoy the end of Summer evenings and also have the experience of a lifetime catching one of these prehistoric monsters! Give us a call to set up your Sturgeon adventure this Fall.

We hope to see you soon out on our boats and the fish are waiting.

Capt. Kevin & Crew

Muskie Season is Here!

Well we are swinging through the 2015 season. We have wrapped up our Walleye fishing season on the Detroit River. We had some great success as well as many days with limited catches. It was an awesome start to the season and tons of fun was had by all our customers! We found that the early part of the Walleye season produced some huge Walleyes and the fishing was best on the Michigan side of the Detroit River. When the waters started to heat up and the action swung into full speed then we found that the best fishing was on the Canadian side of the river, which was most of May. We saw less big Walleyes but many good eaters. The customers who came out for this Walleye gold rush were happy to take their share of it home to enjoy!

In May we started our Bass Charters with the early spring catch and release on the Michigan side. We have had awesome success with those trips and have averaged between 4 to 6 dozen Bass caught in our 6 hour trips! The action has been great all along the Michigan side of the lake along the shore between Metro Beach and the mouth of the Detroit River. They have been found in between 8 to 13 feet of water depending on the time of day and time of the month. These trips have been great fun for all who were out and it is the best action to take the kids out for some real fun fishing. They are able to handle these fish with little help and the fight is awesome whether it is for the kids or adults! The Bass action will continue through the start of September, so if you haven’t gotten out to experience this fun filled action, give us a call and set up your trip now.

Muskie season is opening this weekend! We will be out chasing these monsters as they are just finishing up their spawning period and should be hungry. Last year’s opening tournament produced some great fish and the largest that was caught was a whopping 37 pound Monster. We anticipate the action to be good this season and may be even better than last season, which is hard to believe! We have already caught some awesome Muskies during our Walleye season in the Detroit River. We are welcoming any of our customers to set the new season record as well as beat last season’s best, a 40 pound Monster!
We are now booking up quickly for this summer action with Bass and Muskie, so give us a call to set up your trips while we still have available dates.

We look forward to hearing from you and look forward to getting you out fishing!

Spring Swing

Well Spring is swinging into a great time to be out fishing this 2015 season!

We have been in the Detroit River since the start of April and getting our fill of the Walleye action! The Walleye season started out with many huge hens that were in their spawn phase being caught and these were all trophy fish. The action has continually picked up on both the American and Canadian sides of the river. The season has progressed and with May we have had some awesome action with many limits of Walleye caught on our trips and now the river is full of the best size of eater Walleye that you could want. If you haven’t got your piece of this spring Walleye rush now is the time as this action will not last. We will be running our Walleye trips through the end of May.

We also have both of our big boats in the water and have been out fishing for the early season Bass on the Michigan side of Lake St. Clair. The Bass action has been off or I should say “ON the hook”. We have been averaging between 4 to 6 dozen Bass caught every trip out. We have had many Bass between the 2 to 3 pound mark and have also had many over the 4 pound mark! These trips are great for people whom love that ultra-light tackle to fight fish in a hand to lip battle. It is also great for kids that love the constant action and the Bass are a great fight for everyone!

Muskie season is just around the corner and we look forward to chasing these monster predators of the lake all summer and fall.

Give us a call to set up your trips and get in on the action!

Walleye Season Is Upon Us!

Don’t miss out on the best Walleye fishing in the country! The Walleye Run only comes once a year and lasts until the end of May.

We wanted to let everyone know that our 2015 Fishing Season is officially under way! We have launched our river boat “River Raider”, which is down at Kean’s Marina on the Detroit River and ready for the spring Walleye run that is underway right now!

Spring has finally sprung and The Spring Walleye run has finally begun as they are loaded in the Detroit River system, with over 6 million of these Walleye running the river for their spring spawning, it is the best Walleye fishing in the country! The big hens are being caught often at this time and the numbers of Walleye caught are increasing daily. Limit catches of Walleye are most common on our charters but we always let those monster hens go to lay their eggs and keep this great fishery going!

Captain Keith has already been checking out some of our hot spots and looks like he is on top of his game as usual by the looks of this monster hen! He is excited to get you out fishing this Walleye season and teach you some of his skills at slaying the fish.

We have extended our Walleye trips to 5 hours for up to 4 people to increase your fun and catches. We have all new Ultralight Rods and Reels by Shimano, so you will feel everything and get the best fight out of these Walleye!

The Walleye madness only happens once a year and lasts until the end of May so the time is limited but the action is hot and heavy at times. The peak of this Walleye season will be upon us in no time at all. Don’t miss out on the best Walleye fishing in the country. Call us to reserve your charters and get in on the action!

Last Call

Well we are in the final stretch of our 2014 Fishing Season and what a season it has been. September proved to be a record month for Sturgeon fishing! We were able to boat a total of 49 Sturgeon and fished for 15 nights. The size this season has been incredible with 26 fish measuring between 60 and 69 inches! A fish with incredible power and acrobatic tendencies Sturgeon will give you a battle that you will never forget. We are running both or Regular Sturgeon and the Executive Sturgeon Charters through the end of the month.

Muskie fishing has also had its good and bad days due to the Fall weather changes. We had some days with just a few fish boated as well as some days with over 10 Muskies boated. We did notice that all the Muskies are starting their Fall feeding frenzy to bulk up before winter. The upcoming weeks should produce some real Fall trophy Muskie!

We are going to run our charters through October 30th this season. We have some availability to still get people out fishing. If you want to fill a cooler with Perch or hunt down a Fall trophy Muskie or try battling the largest prehistoric river monster the great lakes has to offer, then don’t wait, give us a call to set up your final charters for the 2014 season.

We look forward to hearing from you and getting you out this fall.

It will allow more people to enjoy these awesome charters and let them see and experience the thrills of these great prehistoric river monsters!

Switch of the Season

Well August has come and gone and left us with some great fishing days on Lake St. Clair. We have been chasing the Muskies as well as the Bass this past month and have had some great success with both species.
The Muskies have been chasing the bait around the lake and with the weather that we have had that the bait was getting blown around quite a bit. The weeds also reeked their havoc with us and making us work hard for the Muskies caught.
We have still had a 7 Muskie average caught this past month and have also had many days with double digits caught. We boated over 3 Muskie in the 30 Pound Club and welcome and congratulate those new members!

The Bass fishing charters have averaged 4 dozen per trip. We have had days with fewer numbers but the quality has been awesome. We boated many Bass over the 4 to 5 pound mark and caught 2 Small Mouth Bass over 6 pounds.
September starts the Fall fishing season and usually brings some weather changes that can be both good and bad. We expect the Muskie fishing to continue to be great as we have not had our full dose of summer yet!

We will be fishing for Muskie through the end of October and will transition to chasing the Monsters as Fall approaches (not that we ever stop hunting the trophy Muskie)!
We will be also starting our Perch trips this month as they have been starting to school up a bit. We have been catching quite a few during our Bass charters lately so the time has come to fill the freezer with fresh lake perch.

We are starting our Sturgeon charters this month as well. If you have not yet experienced the trill of battling a prehistoric River Monster, then book your Sturgeon trip now!
We hope this finds everyone well and look forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing this Fall.

Capt. Kevin Backus

Summer’s Sizzle

We are well into the peak of the Muskie fishing season! We have had some very strange weather this summer producing a wide range of temperatures and weather patterns. These weather changes have brought many storm fronts through the area, which has made for some real interesting days of fishing. The numbers of Muskies caught have been very good for the past month or so as we have averaged 7 to 9 fish boated per trip. However even on the days with fewer fish we have noticed the quality of the Muskie has been excellent with the majority of them being over the 40 inch mark! The monster Muskies have also made their presence  known in our live wells as we have boated 12 Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark and our largest of the season so far was 54½ inches and weighed 39 pounds!

The Bass fishing over the past month has also been pretty awesome. We have had many days with high numbers caught and some real quality sized Bass caught as well. The past few weeks has had some lower numbers caught but the quality and size has been great. We boated quite a few over the 5 pound mark in the past few trips and the largest was over 6 pounds!

While the Muskie and Bass fishing is still in full swing we are preparing for our Fall fishing season, which is just around the corner! We will be stopping the Bass Charters in the start of September and we will be starting up our Fall Sturgeon fishing and Perch fishing charters.

If you want to get out and fill your cooler with some jumbo Perch or would like to experience the battle of your life with a prehistoric river monster, then don’t wait as our dates are filling fast.

We will be targeting our trophy Muskie through October, so if you want to see what the fall Muskie hunts are all about come on out.

Give us a call to discuss your charters and set them up. We will be looking forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing this fall.

May Madness at Mr. Muskie Charters!

We are now into May and our fishing season is well under way! We have been hitting the Walleyes down in the Detroit River since the start of April. The action has been getting better week by week. The monster Walleye are fewer and far between now but the numbers of Walleye being caught has increased tremendously. We have been catching many more of the good eating size between 18 and 22 inches. The Walleye catching has been accompanied by lot of small mouth Bass as well as the Silver Bass. The action during this time has been outrageous! The Walleye have been stacking up in our fishing grounds between the mouth of Lake St. Clair and the Ambassador Bridge. The action has mostly been on the Canadian side of the river for the Walleyes although some have been caught on the Michigan side as well. We have just started our Bass Fishing Charters for this season in the start of May and the action has been great! We are catching quite a few Bass on our trips averaging between 6 to 8 dozen. The sizes range between 2 to 4 pounds. We will have a better report on the Bass fishing in the next newsletter. It seems that they have been between 7 to 10 feet along the Michigan shoreline and actively feeding while protecting their beds. We still have some dates available for our Walleye Charters as we will run them through the start of June. We also have a some dates available for our Bass Charters during the early season catch and release on the Michigan side in May and the start of June. Don’t miss out on this great action as it will be gone before you know it, just like our available dates! Give us a call to set up your trips. We look forward to hearing from you and getting you out fishing! Tight Lines, Capt. Kevin Backus Contact Information

The Close of Another Great Season!

Well the season has come to a close for Mr. Muskie Charters. We have pulled “Mr. Muskie Too” out for the season and plan on getting her all ready for next year. Taking a look back at the season it was an awesome year and we have to thank all of our customers for making this season a huge success! We should also give the fish some credit for making our trips very successful by cooperating and playing the game. The early Bass season in May was an awesome time to haul in many great Bass averaging between 3 to 4 pounds, we also had quite a few 5+ pounders. Our largest Bass of the season was over the 6 pound mark! We averaged between 6 to 8 dozen Bass caught per trip throughout our Bass season (May – September). We even had some days where we boated over 100 Bass in our 6 hour charters! Muskie fishing this season was unbelievable and the best we have seen as far as action and Monster trophy fish. The numbers of fish did fluctuate throughout the season, mostly due to weather and cold fronts. However, we had an awesome season filled with lots of action. We averaged 10 Muskie boated per trip through August and 8 fish average over the whole fishing season. We had over 24 fish that were master angler awards. We boated 16 Monster trophy Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark as well as breaking our careers best at 40 pounds. Great job to all these anglers and welcome to our 30 Pound Club and opening a new 40 Pound Club! The past month of Muskie fishing proved to be some great fishing with some hard fishing days as well. The weather was switching to fall, which gets the Muskies in their feeding frenzy, it also comes with a lot of high and changing winds that make the fishing tough and the areas that are fishable harder to find. We did do very well and caught some real Monsters the last month. We had 3 over 30 pounds and also set our new 40 pound record! We found the Muskies moving in closer to shore in shallower waters and feeding heavy on the shad that go back into the rivers. Perch fishing was very good this past month as they were schooling up in some of our hot spots and had moved to the deeper water. This proved to be some great fishing and we had days with over 100 perch caught filling our customers coolers with the best eating jumbo yellow belly perch anyone could ask for! There were some days that were tough fishing perch as well with the winds and weather causing the lake to turn over making it a muddy mess, however all in all it was great fall perching! Sturgeon Fishing, our newest charter offering was a huge success! We had a lot of interest from our customers and the ones who tried it out had a blast catching these monster prehistoric beasts. Some even came back for multiple trips as they found out just how addicting this type of charter really is! We had an average of 3 Sturgeon boated per trip along with lots of other action catching Sheepshead and Catfish while waiting for the “magic hour” to arrive. We boated 4 monster Sturgeon over the 60 inch mark and our seasons best was just under 70 inches weighing over 100 pounds! We have really fine-tuned our techniques and found many great hot spots to make these charters an awesome experience. We found that these were the battles that took our customers hours to boat their fish of a lifetime making it a very memorable trip and getting them addicted to our newest charter offerings. We look forward to getting more of our customers out to try these awesome trips next season! We had an awesome fishing season and again want to thank all of our customers for their support for the 2013 season! We look forward to getting you out in 2014, which we are currently booking. The Sturgeon Expierence!

The Sturgeon fishing has begun and we are running our fall Sturgeon charters! We have had our first few trips out already and have had great results! We have boated as many as 3 fish in a trip and see a lot of action from other species like the catfish and sheep head while waiting for the Sturgeon to strike. Man when they do strike it is “Game On!” the battles with these prehistoric Monsters can last for hours… yes hours! We had a group out that had a Monster Sturgeon on that took them 2 hours taking turns to finally get to the boat. When they got it in the boat and regained their composure they saw that they caught a 69 inch Monster Sturgeon, which is our current largest Sturgeon caught this year! We are running our Sturgeon trips through the end of October and have limited availability. This is a short season but an awesome fishing trip! Take a look at some of these impressive pictures of these prehistoric monsters! Give us a call to set up your Sturgeon trips now. Don’t wait and let that fish of a lifetime get away from you! Tight Lines, Capt. Kevin Backus

September Swing!

September Swing Well the summer is now quickly changing into fall and the summer breezes are being replaced with the fall winds. This time of the season is a short but unstable switch over into the fall feeding frenzy! We have noticed that these changes can have both great days of fishing with good numbers of catches as well as slow days and some higher winds to deal with. September proved to be just that… We had many days with over 10 Muskies boated and caught 3 more trophy Monster Muskies that were over the 30 pound mark! Congrats to our new 30 pound club members on a great job at winning the battle over these monster fish. We did have a few slower days that produced less numbers of fish but the overall quality of the fish that were caught was great! We were also limited on those days as to where we were able to fish due to the weather. Since these changes in the weather are almost over we have noticed that the fishing has picked back up for most all the days and foresee an awesome fall fishing frenzy underway. We are noticing that the Muskies are moving back into the shallower waters and starting to feed on our larger baits. This defiantly indicates that the fall fishing has come under way and are sure that it will only pick up and get better. This fall fishing frenzy is a great time to get out fishing for the Muskies as they are going to be feeding heavy to put on their winter weight and will be hitting the baits hot and hard! We notice that this also produces the big fish in the sense that they will all be pretty fat, as well as when we catch those 50 inch fish they will have some serious weight behind them. We are still going to be running our charters through the end of October and expect to see some great days of fall fishing. We still have some limited availability so call us to book your fall Muskie hunts now. Don’t miss out on your chance at a Monster Muskie this fall as the 40 pounder could be yours! Tight Lines, Capt. Kevin Backus Contact Information

These prehistoric giants are the largest fresh water fish in all the great lakes measuring up to 70 inches and weighing over 200 pounds! They can be up to 100 years old. We have a 3 to 5 fish average during these trips and have boated as many as 6 of these monsters in 1 trip. This is a true battle as well as a test of strength between the fish and the angler. Fighting these massive fish can take up to 45 minutes! These trips will be guided by Keith who is a renowned expert in fishing for these Sturgeon and he has mastered the techniques needed to catch and land these massive prehistoric monsters. He has worked at refining his methods for fishing the Sturgeon as well as getting their seasonal movements down to a science. This will ensure you the best chance at landing one of these lake monsters which are a fish of a lifetime! These trips are going to be very relaxing and enjoyable as they will start before the sun sets and go into night a bit too. You will be able to enjoy the evening and the sun setting. However when the Sturgeon strike be ready for hands on action as well as hands on helping boating, measuring and reviving these fish. We will be practicing Catch and Release with all of the Sturgeon as we do with the Muskies, however if you get one of these trophy fish and would like to get a mount done we will get all the data and pictures for you to get a fiberglass replica. You can expect to have some hands on time viewing and handling these fish as we have made a special XL live well for the Sturgeon to revive before taking your pictures and being released back into the water.

Swinging into September!

Well August is now past and it was a great month of fishing action. There were a lot of swinging weather patterns that had brought some tougher fishing days, however we boated fish in all these adverse conditions. We went through some days of 90 degree temps and nice breezes out of the south and then sudden cold fronts with north winds that limited our areas of fishing. During this month we still had a higher than average number of fish boated… around 8 to 10 Muskies per trip! We started the month still fishing the deeper water in the middle of the lake however as the month went on and the weather patterns changed we also had to change our fishing locations as well as our tactics for catching the Muskies. We have been working the south shore of the lake from 12 to 15 feet of water trying to find nice water color and little or no weeds for the best fishing conditions. We boated 3 to 4 fish over the 50 inch and 30 pound mark this past month and want to congratulate all of our new 30 pound club members! Great job catching these monsters and releasing them back so they can get even bigger and be caught another day. The Bass fishing during the past month proved to be some good action with our average catch of 4 to 5 dozen per trip. We also notice a good amount of Perch being caught during these trips which is a good sign that they are starting to school for the fall bite. We will be ending our Bass Trips as well as our Sunset Cruises this month, We will be starting our Perch Charters as well as our Sturgeon Trips. We will still be catching the Muskies and hunting them down during their fall feeding frenzy through October! We are now booking the rest of this season as well as 2014. Give us a call to set up your charters! Tight Lines, Capt. Kevin Backus

Muskie Season is Here!!

Muskie Season kicked off last weekend with a bang! The MOMC held their opening tournament and most anglers had good success fishing different areas around the lake. The winner of the tournament caught a 37.6 lb Muskie that was 52” long! We had some good success with our fist Muskie boated was 48”. We ended up 3 for 5 and fished the dumping grounds area. This is the start to a great season with huge fish like this being caught the door is wide open for many trophy Muskie and a possible new lake record! The bass fishing continues to be excellent as we have been catching 5-7 dozen bass each trip. Most days you can expect to get some other species like rock bass, sheephead & silver bass as they have entered the lake as well as filling up the Detroit River. The action has been very good around the mile roads in 8-12 foot of water using live bait has worked the best! We are still booking trips for this season and have limited availability during the peak fishing season. Give us a call to set up your fishing charters now while we still have dates available. Don’t miss out on this great fishing season! Tight Lines, Capt. Kevin Backus Mr. Muskie Charters (586) 771-8817 phone and fax (586) 206-4172 cell www.mrmuskiecharters.com
